Is American Milk Ready to Drink?
It seems like it was a long time ago (5 months) when I was asked this question by a Burmese friend of mine named Lal Li Pui. His gallon of milk was setting on the kitchen table ready for him to boil it before partaking. I was able to answer the question and talk to him about pasteurization, butterfat content and the price of milk.
Lil Li Pui (nick named “Puh Yah”) came back with a more urgent question a few weeks ago, his debit card had been misused to steal money from his checking account. It happened at a gas station where he regularly buys gas (yes he has a license and a car, but that’s another story). I was able to help him and three other Burmese appeal to the bank manager, make a report to the police (for which the Burmese have great fear) and receive the money back from his bank (right now I know that Bank of America, Wachovia and BB&T will provide this kind of help). On Sunday morning in ESL class we were able to talk to all of the Burmese about debit card precautions and monitoring their bank accounts.
This is a picture of Thang Tlang, “Puh Yah” and Hlamay (in the back) at the bowling night provided by Eddie Green for our Burmese newcomers earlier this year.
