Burmese Family Parties
This weekend Pastor Inthava Inthasane and I attended a birthday party for Nece and Esther the June birthday children of Thang Tlang and Hlamay. A Chin birthday party is a worship service where hymns are sung, testimonies are given, a message from the pastor and words of encouragement to the family are shared. The party was emceed by Biak, their new neighbor. After the service we cut the birthday cake and had dinner together. Dinner was a special meal cooked by family friends. We had rice, pork, fish soup, a type of slaw, melon and grapes. There were about 30 people present and we ate on the floor in three different shifts.
Another party, similar in format, I attended was a farewell party for Van Boi Thang, Tin Hnem and James. This couple was the first Burmese family Kay and I got to know. Our care group, the Empty Nesters, helped them with some basic needs and then went through the pre-mature birth and short life of their baby Moses. Van Boi has first cousins in Elkridge, Md (near I-95 and Delaware) and they have assured him of a better paying job at a plastics factory in their community. I told them I see this as the closing of a chapter in their life and the beginning of a new. We will miss them but wish them the very best in Maryland.
