ESL for Burmese Refugees

One of the key emphases of our leader Pastor Inthava Inthasane is to teach our new arrivals from Burma how to speak English.  On Sunday mornings Kay McMurphy, Cynthia Poole, Betsey Greer, and Marcia Jobe teach over 40 Burmese ESL.  This is total immersion English, so they do not use translators.  The English speaking Burmese are invited to attend a Bible study for Burmese who speak English.  During the middle of the week Biak Cin Thang teaches ESL in several key homes throughout High Point.  Here are some pictures from a late August ESL class.

About johnmcmurphy

Jesus is first and foremost in my life. He is above all religions, principalities and powers. In everything He must increase and I must decrease. Into the hands of Jesus, God has placed life and death, truth and purity. strength and meaning. Only in a growing understanding of the triune God, and his son Jesus can I do, breathe, exist and serve. I have a Bachelor's degree in Bible from Vennard College, a Master's in Social Science from Azusa Pacific University and a Ph. D. from Ohio State in Family Relations and Human Development. I am an ordained pastor involved in cross-cultural ministry. I am currently employed at several colleges as an instructor. If you need to get in touch with me, just leave a comment, I screen all comments and so you can leave further contact information which I will erase before it is published. -John

  1. We are getting ready to resettle some Burmese refugees in Vancouver. Do you have any tips for us on how to work with pre-literate and non-literate refugees?

    • I am wondering if you have any materials that could be emailed. I am currently working with two Burmese families in New York City.

  2. I have a young friend who is from Myanmar. She lives very isolated in Powell River, BC. She cannot drive and speaks very little English. Can you tell me if there is anyone she can correspond with who could help her learn English, or do you know of a good website that would help her? Thank you very much.
