Having Ears, but not Hearing
He spoke and our blazing sun winked into existence. He articulated the laws of physics and so knit together the fabric of our universe. He named water and land; day and night; moon and stars and they became the context of life as we know it.
He who spoke wind, fire and water into existence, whispered to Elijah the prophet. He who commanded legions, cried “It is finished” and thus began the ministry of the Holy Spirit speaking right into our souls.
Against this backdrop let me share some juxtaposition. I have been preparing a Bible lesson on Stephen’s final sermon and hour before his death. His accusers were so upset with his teaching that they stuck their fingers in their ears, not wanting to listen to Stephen speak the first recorded prayer to the Lord Jesus (He gave the church prayer, in the name of Jesus).
During this same week, I sat down with One Kiss‘ son Ku Lu Taw and discovered that he is in fact hearing for the first time in his life. You see a few weeks ago he received a cochlear implant. Now he is starting the school year on a new footing. Having never heard the sound of words, he also could not talk. Although he will grow up in a multi-lingual home, his initial and primary spoken language is likely to be English. The sign language that has sufficed in his family today will slowly become unnecessary. And he has the hope during his lifetime of undiscovered surgery on his other ear that is less invasive then the implant.
While on vacation this last month we worshiped at Twin Rivers church in Springfield Oregon. A few rows ahead of us a couple of college students participated in the songs via sign and one of the young men interpreted for the other during the message.
Now my wife tells me I am not hearing like I used to. An ear specialist joked that my loss seemed to be right in the range of the female voice. I hope it is not deliberate selective hearing loss. But one day I will hear according to the Design specs.
During the ministry of Jesus it is recorded that He made the deaf to hear. He touched the ears of the deaf and they could hear. One day God will heal all our bodies of illness, disease, bad eyesight, and poor hearing. We will never miss a refrain from the angel choruses sung in heaven because of this healing transformation enacted on behalf of all believers.
Now think about some of these things. The Bible says in the beginning was the Word, that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. God’s intent is that we hear him and obey His voice. He wants to speak a new name to us. He designed us and will redeem us.
He speaks and the sound of His voice
Is so sweet that the birds hush their singing
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing
And He walks with me
And He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known
