How Many Unsettled Burmese Refugees.
I’ve been curious about this question and found a link that has reported on an initiative to do a census of the eastern border refugees in Thai operated refugee camps. The TBBC estimates 145,000 refugees still in camps as of April 2011. The UNHCR gives the total Burmese refugee count at 416,000, making it the 5th largest refugee output of any country in the world. A few of our High Point Burmese refugees came to America via New Delhi, India. An estimated 675 refugees are in that city (from Burma) at this time.
Many of the refugees from the western side of Burma flee south to Malaysia. There may be up to 75,000 Burmese refugees in Malaysia awaiting resettlement. Recently the Malay government proposed a plan to return the Burmese people to their country. This is a cause of great concern as of this post.
The US Department of State had this paragraph posted today on refugee count:
Malaysia hosts more than 90,000 refugees and asylum seekers, primarily in urban areas, 91% of whom are from Burma. Chin and Rohingya comprise the largest groups of this population. Up to 100,000 unregistered Burmese Chin are living in India’s Mizoram State, with another 7,500 Burmese refugees and asylum seekers (primarily Chin) in Delhi, India, of which up to 4,000 are UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)-registered refugees.
